Which office is more inspiring?

We consider the NATURAL design elements that can enhance the positive behavior in an office environment

An office layout can impact employee behavior by either appealing to our natural tendencies and preferences regarding the noise, lighting, shape and position of furniture as well as the ease of using and tools in the space.

Shaping and Influencing Behaviour in the Office

A space has the power to influence a visitor’s emotions, thoughts, and overall perception before you’ve even had a chance to interact with anyone. It influences behaviour and mindset in the process.

People respond to colour, size, lighting, sound and materials used. This month, we’ll explore the Benefits of Biophilia in the Workplace.

Science says nature puts everyone in a happy place that supports mental and physical health while even boosting work performance. Essentially positively influencing behaviour in the office. Natural environments reduce stress, as reflected in lower cortisol levels, and increase happiness, as measured by higher dopamine levels.

When biophilic design is thoughtfully applied to the office, the potential benefits are immense. Research concludes that bringing the outdoors in can improve workplace performance, health, and well-being by as much as 15%. It also indicates that workplaces incorporating nature attract and retain talent, while those that don’t can attribute 10% of absences to a lack of natural elements.

When comparing the two offices above, both seem modern, spacious and functional; however, when comparing the following elements, the right office scores better on positive impact it has on employee behaviour:

  • Indoor plants – bringing nature closer to the employees. A view of nature is always beneficial and should be leveraged.
  • Interesting lighting is a great way to distinguish various areas by application and can enhance either focus (bright light) or creativity (low light).
  • Acoustic elements – reducing echo/reverberation in the office enhances focus and a feeling of comfort
  • Natural materials – wood, stone and natural textures relax the mind
  • Ergonomics – offering adjustable desks, ergonomic chairs, 2nd monitors and soundproof chat rooms is a major upgrade to the user experience.

TREND: Outdoor Spaces as Meeting Areas:

Rooftop terraces or garden spaces are increasingly popular.

“The benefits of designing for social spaces extend far beyond their visual appeal. These spaces serve as catalysts for interaction, breaking down barriers and fostering relationships. In office settings, a well-designed outdoor meeting area becomes a hub for collaborative discussions and brainstorming sessions. Its informal atmosphere encourages open communication and idea-sharing, boosting creativity and productivity.” – Red-thread.com
